Casual elegance in West Chester's newest BYOB

In the evening just off road at the corner of Route 100 and W. Neilds Street in West Chester, the enticing flicker of table lanterns can be seen through the windows of this community’s newest upscale restaurant. Crisp white linens, flowers on each table, and bright, colorful artwork on the walls define the casual elegance at Butterfish. Owned by Andy Patton, Butterfish opened only a month ago and follows his well-known and successful downtown West Chester restaurant, Spence’s Café.

The Butterfish location takes Andy just across the street from his introduction to the world of serving people. As a teenager, Andy began working in Jamison's Dairy Bar – long gone but once a favorite for West Chester residents. Self taught and using the philosophy of serving his clients what they enjoy eating has served Andy well as he honed his skills at several popular area restaurants before opening Spence Café ten years ago.

Head chef, Dan Maui, complements and brings his own fourteen years' experience to meeting the desires of diners at Butterfish. Studying Geology at West Chester University is far from preparing delicious dishes for eager patrons, so after graduation Dan was drawn to follow his heart – creating and preparing fine foods to satisfied diners – and that he does well!

Butterfish is a refreshingly different restaurant boasting its own on-site smoker for preparing fresh fish, seafood, and even pork. In fact, one of the best offerings from the appetizer menu is a platter of assorted smoked fish. Accompanied by pickled red onion, roasted peppers, and horseradish Dijon sauce, the flavors and textures of Hawaiian butterfish, Idaho rainbow trout, day boat scallops, lemon pepper shrimp, New Zealand green shell mussels, or Norwegian hot smoked salmon are enhanced by the smoking process. Sampling other appetizers might bring you to the baby back lamb ribs with sweet onion barbecue sauce and many other scallop, shrimp, and crab creations to whet your appetite!

Entrées include not only the fresh fish and seafood offerings but continue with filet mignon, free range chicken, rack of lamb, and specials changing every two to three weeks. Shared sides complete the menu. The lunch menu offers a wide range of soups, entrée salads, panini grill, sandwiches, and of course, fresh smoked fish dishes! The Butterfish chefs make their own tasty breads and tempting desserts.

Sunday brunch is already a favorite at Butterfish after only one month! Everything your heart desires comes from their kitchen – from house-made sticky bun French toast, omelets, steak and eggs, to their own smoked salmon or trout for brunch. Plans are being made for wine dinners in the near future. Catering and gourmet take away are available now.

Reservations are suggested on weekends at Butterfish but don’t worry about parking – ample free parking is available! Butterfish is a BYOB establishment and you might note for your convenience, there is a wine and spirit store in nearby Bradford Square Shopping Plaza.
