Longwood Gardens

Welcome to the world’s premier horticultural display garden, right here in the western Philadelphia suburbs. Longwood Gardens was created by industrialist Pierre S. du Pont (and is sometimes referred to as the DuPont Gardens) and offers 1,050 acres (425 hectares) of gardens, woodlands, and meadows; 20 outdoor gardens; 20 indoor gardens within 4 acres (1.6 hectares) of heated greenhouses; 11,000 different types of plants; spectacular fountains; extensive educational programs including horticultural career training and internships; and 800 horticultural and performing arts events each year, from flower shows, gardening demonstrations, courses, and children’s programs to concerts, organ and carillon recitals, musical theatre, and fireworks displays. Longwood is open every day of the year and attracts more than 900,000 visitors annually.

The outdoor gardens and Conservatory open at 9 am every day of the year. Both close at 5 pm from November through March and at 6 pm from April through October, although both are frequently open later for special events and holiday displays. The Longwood Gardens Shop in the Visitor Center is open daily during garden hours.

Longwood’s Terrace Restaurant offers cafeteria-style dining year-round as well as full-service dining from late March through December.

There is something happening at Longwood every day of the year. Activities range from discovery stations and storytimes to gardening demonstrations and plant walks to bluegrass concerts and carillon recitals. The Ballroom and Organ Chamber, which houses Longwood’s historic 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ, are also undergoing renovations, including the construction of a new Organ Museum. Meanwhile, the majority of indoor gardens and all the outdoor gardens will remain open, and visitors can enjoy the new outdoor Bee-aMazed Children’s Garden.

At Longwood, "All The Garden’s A Stage." The Performing Arts program offers more than 400 events each year. Like the horticultural displays, each season is carefully designed to offer visitors a unique entertainment experience. Pierre duPont's interest in music and theatre inspired him to create performance venues throughout the Gardens, from an intimate concert on the Conservatory Terrace to a full-scale musical in the scenic Open Air Theatre.
